It all started with a big push. First, my older brother went to Foothill. Two years later, the next brother attended. Suddenly, I had no choice. It was a done deal.
Well, in truth, my going to Foothill was a done deal for everyone else in my family, but not for me. All of my friends were either going to Nordhoff in Ojai or Ventura High School. I was worried about not having friends at Foothill. I had forgotten that I had always made friends everywhere I ever went. My parents always remind me of when I was little and they would take me out to dinner. I would spot a child in the restaurant that was close to my age, leave the table, and make new friends out of total strangers.

Somehow I imagined that I could not make new friends at Foothill. I felt that the social groups would already be set and that there would be no place for me. I was a newcomer from a small Ojai school. Fortunately, my circle of friends has seemed to grow more quickly than I could have ever imagined. As it turns out, my pushy brothers were right.

After several weeks I can honestly say that Foothill is a great fit for me. The teachers are nice, good listeners, and they actually know my name. Here, I am “Will”. My friends tell me that at Ventura High School the teachers say “Hey, you, in the white shirt!” Foothill is a small enough school that friends come easily. Homework is a huge adjustment for me, but I can work through it and get better at it. I am a work in progress. I need that push --- right on into college
